Talking about my mistakes is uncomfortable; there's no denying that. But looking back, I see the purpose behind every misstep. From struggling academically in high school, where I barely made it through, to my time in the Marine Corps as a navigator, and later transitioning to a career in accounting and banking, my journey has been anything but conventional.
After leaving the military, I pursued education at Purdue University, where I earned a degree in accounting with a minor in finance. Despite my initial struggles, I found myself drawn to the field, even though I later realized there were crucial aspects missing from my academic experience.
Working in accounting for Marriott was stable, but I felt confined. It wasn't until the aftermath of 9/11 that I decided to reassess my priorities and pursue a path aligned with my passions. Transitioning to banking, I immersed myself in real estate, learning the ins and outs of the industry as a commercial underwriter.
However, my biggest setback came in 2008 when I made a series of financial mistakes that nearly bankrupted me. It was a humbling experience, but it also revealed my knack for strategic thinking and problem-solving. Despite the hardships, I refused to give up and gradually climbed out of the hole I had dug myself into.
Now, at 50, I'm grateful for the journey that brought me here. Despite the embarrassment of past failures, I've found success as a business strategist, earning more than ever before. I owe it all to the lessons learned along the way and the unwavering support of those who believed in me.
